Shanta K Rai

Profile

Shanta Kumar Rai explores the inner feelings and emotions of female characters in the contemporary context of Nepal. Melancholy, alienation and poignant feelings of women get expression in his paintings. There is distance between these brooding women and the society. By receding from the society, they are lost in their own world. Their inner experience is presented analogically through the image of a bird.

There is similarity in the situation of the bird and these women. We have seen several times the bird is kept in a cage. In the same manner, the women are in the invisible and intangible cage of patriarchy. They have been denied the freedom. The house is in the name of husband. All the decisions are taken by men. Sometimes women are considered as goddess. But this is only the flatter and the external veil. Actually, they are exploited as commodity. Cooking, washing and bearing children are their regular duty. Despite their hard work, they are made dependent on male.<

On one hand Shanta Kumar's works depict the pathetic situation of women, on the other hand, his works are the silent resistance and questioning of the oppression and domination. The viewers may ask: why these women are alienated and so sad? Such questions may lead to the root cause of the women's marginalization. The dim colours and soft texture suggest their mild manner of resistance. The artist also shows the anthropomorphic characteristic of the bird in the sense that the bird seems to communicate with the women. It seems to understand them. The women identify themselves with the bird. The ever present darkness throughout the canvas suggests the gloom and painful feeling. These women are not the individuals but the type that represent most of the oppressed women in Nepal.
